FACES = Friends And Caregivers, Encephalitis Survivors


FACES speakers include: 

Presentation by Dr. Jacopo Annese, Ph.D.    Dr. Annese is the director of The Brain Observatory at the University of California San Diego.  The Brain Observatory is a member of the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, a nonprofit organization of more than 300 leading neuroscientists committed to increasing public awareness about the progress and promise of brain research.   Dr. Annese will provide a review of notable patients and their contribution to the understanding of the human brain. 

Dr. Melanie Burgos-Alarcio, pediatric neurologist from Phoenix Arizona.  Dr. Alarcio has over 20 years experience as a neurologist, and has treated many patients with autoimmune encephalitis/encephalopathy. She specializes in pediatric patients, and is an expert in PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders).

Becky Dennis, author of Brain Wreck and patient advocate as well as chief marketing officer of a publicly traded New York company.   Becky is an encephalitis survivor who will speak on patient advocacy.

We are honoured to have three speakers travel from the Netherlands to join us at FACES.   They are: 

  • Marius van Welie, author and encephalitis survivor.   His book, “God's Humor: my life after Encephalitis”, is being published on World Encephalitis Day, February 22, 2014, and
  • Aad Bastemeijer, Marius’ partner for 27 years, Secretary of the Board of Facility Management, Policy Control and Evaluation, City of The Hague, Netherlands
  • Elise Verberg (writer and professional coach) is acting chairman of the Dutch Meningitis Society and is  Marius van Welie's ghostwriter.

Conference Registration  

 FACES 2014 registration fee is $100 for adults; $ 20 for children 12 and under.    Your FACES 2014 registration will include all speakers and activites shown above.

Registrations may be 100% refunded up to and including January 21, 2014.  There will be no refunds after January 21, 2014
